9 Months Old!!!

I cannot believe my baby is 9 months old today! Ya’ll…I was just pregnant yesterday! Oh what a blessing Dawson has been. I had no idea what we used to do before we had him. Yes, our worlds revolve around our baby, and if I had to guess, they always will. At 9 months old, the little guy makes it really clear to his mommy and daddy that he is not a baby anymore. He truly believes he is surely approaching his 2nd birthday. He still takes his cuddles from mommy….but only early in the morning and right before bed. Otherwise, he squirms away because he has very important exploring to do. Although he still LOVES all his toys and will sit and play with them for minutes on end (hey…this is a long time for a little turkey), he much prefers to crawl…at full speed of course towards anything and everything that is pull-up-able. He is in full couch surfing mode too. He pulls himself up and then side steps along. We can’t figure out why, and we are certain he has his reasons, but he loves to crawl with one toy in his hand, pull up on a piece of furniture and then drop his toy on top. This always brings a big smile to his face.

Nursing is turning into a struggle…because like I said, Dawson is pretty sure he is approaching his 2nd birthday and he really thinks nursing is for babies. He isn’t even sure if bottles are appropriate for two year olds. He will take one yes…but not laying down, that is only for babies. He prefers the sippy cup (even though…he hasn’t got it completely figured out yet…although he is pretty sure he does).

Dawson’s favorite time of day is waking up in the morning. He LOVES (and so does mommy) seeing mommy come get him from his crib in the morning. He always has the biggest smile on his face that melts mommy every time. He also loves his bedtime routine. (yes…he is a very routine thriving child, slightly…no really… anal. What do you expect with two engineers as parents?). So we keep his days pretty consistent. So…bedtime routine. Craig always carries him up the stairs to his bedroom with mommy following. Daddy says, “mommy’s going to get you!” I chase them and catch them with full tickles on the belly and toes. No matter what …in sickness and in health, Dawson always ALWAYS does a full belly laugh. He just loves it. Then daddy lays him down to undress him with more tickles, more belly laughs (have I mentioned how much I LOVE watching these two play together?!). Mommy fills up his bathtub. When the water turns off, Dawson immediately gets into crawling position and heads towards the bathtub…at full speed of course. Then it is bath time, then getting PJs on. Oh yes…getting the PJs on. This has turned into full on Mommy –Dawson war. He does not want to sit/lay still long enough to get them on. So we put them on “on-the-go.” Same with his diaper. Generally speaking his diapers are on crooked due to this “on-the-go” challenge. Then we nurse, and off to sleep. Oh our sweet baby is the best sleeper a mommy and daddy could ask for. A solid 10-12 hours every single night.

Dawson is the best little eater too. His favorite food, hands down, no doubt is turkey. The little turkey loves his turkey. He will down a jar of turkey in minutes! He doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth yet, which is hard for us to understand as mommy and daddy have two full sets of sweet teeth.

My favorite thing is to watch him sit and play. I get to work from home every Monday and he is the best working companion. I will be working at my desk and Dawson does such a good job just playing by himself. I love when he fixates on a particular toy and examines it, moves it, studies it, chews it. I love watching his little wheels spinning. Usually at some point he will look over at me and notice that I am watching him and he gives me a big smile, certainly thinking, “oh mommy…I didn’t know you were watching me. Silly mommy.”

We are such a lucky mommy and daddy to have such a sweet blessing in our lives. There is not one single day that has gone by that I haven’t marveled at him and said, “Thank you God for this blessing.” At night when he is asleep in my arms after nursing, I often sit and gaze around his room picturing the years to come and the memories that we will have. I take in deep breaths and smell in his sweet baby smell and watch his little eye lids flutter. I often wonder what he is dreaming about. Is he dreaming about mommy chasing him and daddy up the stairs? Is he dreaming about getting that toy he carried across the room on top of the couch? Maybe he is dreaming about daddy coming home from work and saying, “where is my little turkey toes!” Or maybe he is dreaming about his turkey dinner. I don’t know, but I always pray that his dreams are always sweet. I then put him down and say a prayer asking God to watch over him while we asleep.

These 9 quick months have come and gone so very fast. Sometimes I just want to freeze the moment and relish in these precious moments a bit longer, but at the same time I anticipate the future boy, friend, man, husband, and father he will become. I can’t wait…yet I can. At 9 months, or 50 years old, Dawson will always be my baby.
